The Arrupe Office of Social Formation (formerly the Social Involvement Coordinating Office) was tapped by the Department of Languages, through its Language Center, on a study which focuses on the use of language/s in the different communities in the National Service Training Program / Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP/CWTS).

The research intends to do a language mapping of the different areas in Davao City in order to determine the mother tongue being used as the language of instruction from Kindergarten to Grades 1 to 3 under the K-12 implementation. The result of this collaborative study between the Arrupe Office and the Language Center will hopefully assist in the implementation of the Department of Education’s K-12 program through the creation of teaching and learning materials using the different mother tongues. The use of the mother tongue is part of the reform package under the Basic Education Sector Reform Agenda of the administration of Pres. Benigno Aquino II.

Sophomore students enrolled in NSTP/CWTS, assisted by the corps of SICO Volunteers, did the language profiling of the different areas covered under the program on 25th August and 1st September 2012. The result of the language profiling is currently being collated and processed by the Language Center for data analysis. (By M. Isabel S. Actub, Arrupe Communications & Advocacy)
