The Social Involvement Coordinating Office (SICO) will formally change its name to the “Arrupe Office of Social Formation” at the kickoff on 26th September 2012, celebrating SICO’s 30th year as the social arm of the Ateneo de Davao University. This special celebration will also formally launch SICO’s year-long celebration to commemorate its three decades of work in social formation. The kickoff carries the theme “Leadership and the Formation of Social Conscience.”

The change of name is significant for SICO because it pays tribute to the late former Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, a gigantic historical figure who has been largely credited for his strong articulation of the Jesuit’s primary apostolic mission of the service of the faith and the promotion of justice, expressed in the documents of the 32nd General Congregation (GC 32). This change of name is also born out of SICO’s organizational discernment to reaffirm its mandate and refocus its overall direction in view of the university’s new vision, mission and goals (VMG).

With its new name, SICO (in which case, Arrupe) will certainly proceed as a renewed office that underscores the promotion of social formation in accordance with the university’s social thrust. Likewise, it will continue to advance social consciousness building among the members of the university community and beyond, and respond to the challenge of living a truly engaged faith that does justice.

SICO cordially invites the university community to the kickoff this afternoon at 2:00 p.m., F-213. (By M. Isabel S. Actub, Arrupe Communications & Advocacy)
